About Us: The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Indian Traditional Sciences is a highly active collaboration that works to increase the profile of Ayurveda and its sister sciences in the UK and abroad from the UK Parliament. The APPG is managed by Amarjeet Bhamra, a long-time champion of freedom of choice in healthcare and promoting Complementary and Natural Medicines in the West, a prominent lecturer, practitioner and author on Ayurveda including all Indian Traditional Sciences. Amarjeet has been instrumental in ensuring Ayurveda remains at the heart of the soft power alliances between India and the UK and EU.

Recent Achievements: The year 2018 led to the launch of a new UK-India Tech Alliance, announced by Prime Ministers May and Modi in London. Within the iconic list of ‘Most Influential People in UK INDIA Relations’, the APPG with ‘Amarjeet S Bhamra’ as its coordinator, is working to elevate the bilateral relationship to a new level.

As part of this endeavour, on 18th April 2018, Amarjeet participated at the launch of a new combined Centre of Excellence and Research in Yoga and Indian Traditional Medicine by HRH Prince Charles and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in London.

Continuing promotion of the Indian Traditional Sciences through the APPG has contributed to creating momentum for the 2021 UK/India Trade Agreement. This important “2030 Roadmap for India-UK future relations” is: to "Explore cooperation on research into Ayurveda and promote yoga in the UK; to increase opportunities for the generic medicine supply from India to the UK by seeking access for Indian medicinal products to the NHS; and recognition of Indian generic and Ayurvedic medicines that meet UK regulatory standards."

The first collaborative Ayurveda research programme outside India between the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India and UK medical and academic institutions has now been launched. This study is the result of ca 100 hours of meetings through the APPG Indian Traditional Sciences with the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, World Health Organisation, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, which will include a double-blind clinical trial involving 2,000 people living in the UK with Long–Covid over a period of a year.

We now seek to maximise this opportunity by expanding the research into and accessibility of Ayurvedic sciences and to establish an Ayurveda Centre for Excellence for evidence-based research on Ayurveda and Yoga.

Mission statement for ACE: To establish an Ayurveda Centre for Excellence (ACE) that will promote and regulate the presence of Ayurveda and Yoga in the academic, applied, and research sectors in Europe.

Objectives:
- Deliver educational programmes
- Disseminate findings and discoveries
- Raise the profile of preventive health practices
- Act as a hub for research, training and development
- Expand into a network of residential treatment facilities
- Deliver a trusted public information system on Ayurveda and Yoga preventive healthcare
- Become an adjunct service to the national health service (NHS) for those interested in health and wellbeing improvement

The services will include setting, maintaining professional standards for treatment, training, research, regulatory procedures to cover academic, political and commercial aspects of both products and services.

Why we need to do this: The mainstream medical model of the UK has neither the capacity nor resources to help those who are not sick enough to need a hospital, nor well enough to be functioning members of society. This gap in healthcare leads to increased rates of mental health problems, broken homes and a deserted workforce. Ayurveda has a role to play in reducing this gap.

The intention, through the Ayurveda Centre of Excellence, is to fill this gap with an institutionalised prevention oriented National Wellness Service based on the well-established Traditional Sciences. This new Centre will focus on Ayurveda and Yoga, allowing this unique health perspective to be studied and developed in the UK. By doing so we will not only support the NHS, but also wider society by improving the health and therefore the lives of the people who find themselves with neither health nor health resources. This is an essential part of improving social care within the UK and EU.

Our Target: To help to reach this goal, we have set ourselves a target of £895,000 to fund the purchase of building near London’s Heathrow airport, with token presence in the EU and resources we need to make this vision a reality, and begin delivering preventive health and health-care to all who need it.
